Intravenous Cannulation
This 1/2 day course covers all the skills to safely carry out peripheral Intravenous cannulation. Although there will be opportunities to practice with a simulated arm with synthetic blood. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure they undergo supervised practice and have their competencies signed off in a clinical setting to be confirmed as competent before practicing independently.

Discuss the legal & professional responsibilities of the individual practitioner and employer in relation to cannulation.

Justify the need for cannulation in the light of your own clinical practice.

Review the anatomy & veins of the arm

Critically analyze the potential complications associated with cannulation and discuss appropriate actions to prevent and/or treat these complications.

Define the steps required to prepare the patient for cannulation including equipment required.

Discuss health and safety issues and the prevention and control of infection with regard to cannulation

Assess and select suitable sites for cannulation and sites to be avoided

Review how to avoid and deal with needlestick injuries
