Intravenous Medicine Administration
This 3 hour course is designed for qualified nurses and covers all the theoretical considerations required to administer intravenous drugs and fluids. Although there will be opportunities to practice on a model, the candidate will have to undergo supervised practice in a clinical setting to be confirmed as competent

Define the registered practitioner’s legal and professional responsibilities in the checking, preparation and administration of IV therapies.

Identify the advantages and disadvantages of choosing the IV route of administration.

Demonstrate the ability to accurately complete necessary mathematical calculations prior to preparation of IV therapy.

|
|
Define the steps required to check, prepare and administer medications for IV administration, including equipment required.

Critically analyse the potential complications associated with IV therapy and discuss appropriate actions to prevent and/or treat these complications.

|
To identify issues surrounding stability and compatibility of IV therapies.

Recognise and effectively respond to anaphylaxis
|

To demonstrate the safe handling of items used in IV therapy, e.g. infusion pumps, needles, syringes, ampoules and vials.
